No matter how many kinds of electronic media are going to make its appearance, books are still around; they are not going to become unpopular anytime soon. It is true that book reading suffered a serious setback once e-books came into existence, but when the initial novelty wore off, people are coming back to rediscover the pleasure of reading books in its physical form. This was because many people realized that books in its physical form have several advantages over e-communication. Here are some of them:
- The environmental impact of manufacturing reading devices can leave a serious impact. The energy required to power these devices raises utility bills.
- Unlike what people believe, the home printer does not have the same environmental impact as a commercial printer. In fact, it is possible to print 100 A4 size papers with the same energy one requires to print one A4 size paper from home.
- Paper production is becoming increasingly efficient. Also recycling of paper has risen to about 65% from 2009, so there is no worry about paper wastage.
- Once a book is released, it can be read and reread and this doesn’t require power.
Other reasons why books are still popular and should remain so:
Though books are available through Gutenberg, Internet Archive and Google, sometimes one may fail to find a book one desires to read. He can however, buy the same from a bookstore and read. And that’s just not all – certain books that are available in the electronic format are structured so poorly that it takes an effort to read them.
And lastly, parents who would like to induce the habit of reading in their children, prefer to buy books for them rather than get them Kindle and iPads. If the children go to the library and conduct research for academic purposes, it would improve their thinking and analytic skills. Searching for books in the library and finding what they want to read to improve their knowledge is a different experience altogether.
